NLP members of the EP are asking Italy to respect the rights of European citizens of Romanian origins

Bucharest, May 2nd, 2008 - Renate Weber and her MEP colleagues from the National Liberal Party will next week raise, in the European Parliament, the issue of consequences that Rome authorities' statements - including those made by Franco Frattini, still the European Commissioner for Justice  - regarding the serious violation of the rights of European citizens of Romanian origin.

"It is a matter of no respecting the European legislation on the freedom of movement in the European space, but also the serious discrimination on ethnic reasons, announced by several newly elected representatives of the local authorities, regarding the intention to outlaw marriages between Italian citizens and people of other nationalities", Renate Weber states.

The NLP eurodeputies will raise these matters not only in the EP plenary, but they will also address questions to the EU Council and to the European Commission, requesting the two institutions to officially react to such statements, which are - in the opinion of eurodeputy Renate Weber - "obviously in contradiction with the European legislation and spirit".
