ALDE Group Press Release, December 1, 2008 - The partial results of the Romanian parliamentary elections confirm the solid national support for the Liberal policies of Calin Popescu Tariceanu. The European Liberals and Democrats believe that the PNL's strong results should guarantee its place in the next Romanian government.
 
"I congratulate the PNL on its best election result since 1989. This is recognition of the country's achievements under Calin Popescu Tariceanu and reflects the strong Liberal foundations on which the new Romania is built. This result is an excellent basis for a strong showing in the European Parliament elections next June," said ALDE Leader Graham Watson.
 
"Regardless of which party claims the final victory in yesterday's elections, the PNL has emerged as the kingmaker. That will ensure that it continues to play a key role in shaping Romania's politics - something from which Romanian citizens will benefit. Under Calin Popescu Tariceanu Romania has gained a good reputation in the EU and the country will be well advised to keep him in a leading role," added Watson.
