LIBE Committee
As full member of the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), I am presently working as:
JURI Committee
I have become a member of the JURI Committee in September 2008, following a request from my political group, ALDE, taking into account my juridical expertise, which was considered necessary and useful for the strenghtening of the ALDE representation in the JURI Committee.
As a substitute member of the JURI Committee, I am currently working as:
DEVE Committee
As substitute member of the DEVE Committee I have taken part in the drafting of the European Parliament resolution on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and rape as a war crime (details here ).
On this topic, I have organized an ALDE Seminar, on October 8, 2008, titled "Congo: Rape as a weapon of war"(details here ).
I have also worked as:
I have worked on the DEVE Comittee's opinion on the "Evaluation of EU sanctions as part of the EU's actions and policies in the area of human rights". The opinion can be found here .
I am now full rapporteur for the DEVE Committee Opinion on the "Impact of the Lisbon Treaty on the development of the institutional balance of the European Union".
I am also working, in the frame of the "assent" procedure, for the EP opinion on the EU-Ghana Economic Partnership Agreement.
Delegation for Relations with Countries from the Andean Community
In the frame of Latin America related actions, on March 14-19, 2008 I have been part of the EP working group in Nicaragua. During the visit, we met with state and civil society representatives, and we have also seen how some EU programs are implemented in Nicaragua. The purpose of the working group was to evaluate the political situation in Nicaragua, and the results of EU work in the area.
Following this visit, I plan on starting a debate inside the European Parliament, regarding the situation of reproductive rights of women in Latin America, with an emphasis on terapeutic abortion ban. Romania must, maybe even more than any other country, understand the tragedy of such legislation and express support for those fighting such an injust law. The thousands of Romanian families that have had, over more than two decades, women dying because such an interdiction existed, cannot be indifferent when the same thing happens to other people in the world.
Regarding this topic, on April 23, 2008 I have held a speech in the Strasbourg EP Plenary, during the debate of the Declarations of the Council and the European Commission on the UE-Latin America and Caribbean Summit. Details here .
On April 29-May 1, 2008 I have taken part in the second reunion of the EUROLAT (Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly). I was part of the working group on political affairs and aspects regarding human rights.
The European Parliament has a notable activity of election observation, sending delegations of deputies to monitor election processes in different parts of the world. In this context, I have been elected Chair of the Delegation observing the Ecuador referendum, taking place on September 28, 2008. The activities of EP Delegations are taking place in the organized larger frame of EU Election Observation Missions (EU-EOM), which are led by an MEP, appointed by the Foreign Affairs Commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
I had the honor to be the first Romanian ever appointed Chief of an EU Mission. In January 2009 I coordinated the EU Mission that monitored the Constitutional referendum in Bolivia, on January 25, 2009. Details on the Mission's official website .
